ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the effects of early neck isometrics exercise on relieving neck discomfort in patients after cerebellopontine angle surgeries. Methods The non-synchronous control study was conducted. The control group(40 patients recruited from March to June,2017) received routine nursing, while the intervention group (40 patients recruited from July to November,2017) performed early neck isometrics exercise in addition to routine nursing.Neck discomfort degree, neck rotation range, and Barthel score were measured and compared between two groups on Day 1,Day 3,Day 5,and Day 7 after surgeries. Results The intervention group had a high level of participation and no adverse events occurred.Neck discomfort degree of the intervention group was significantly lower than that of the control group on Day 1,Day 3,and Day 5(P<0.05).Neck rotation range of the intervention group was improved on Day 1 and Day 3 compared with the control group(P<0.05).Barthel score of the intervention group on Day 3,Day 5 and Day 7 was significantly better than that of the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion Early neck isometrics exercise in patients underwent cerebellopontine angle surgeries is safe and feasible, which can alleviate discomfort of neck, and improve patients' early postoperative experience and quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Objective To examine the evidence for the implementation of targeted interventions by adapting the Minimal Eating Observation Form (MEOF-Ⅱ).Methods A descriptive study was designed to investigate 125 patients with stroke in three hospitals in Shanghai. They were investigated using research tools including Demographic information questionnaire and the Chinese version of MEOF-Ⅱ.Results In the nine items of the scale, the most common eating difficulties were getting food from the plate, picking up food from the plate and transfer it to the mouth, eats more than 3/4 of served portionand sitting position. The patient's age had some influence on the incidence of eating difficulties. The correlation between eating difficulties and assistance in eating were significantly different. Conclusions Most stroke patients at least have one type of eating difficulties. This implies that structured observations are needed in order to detect eating difficulties and to individualize further assessment and proper interventions could be designed.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the applicability of Bakes Caregiving Outcom Scale(BCOS) in the study of primary family caregivers'burden of stroke survivors. Methods The BCOS was used to inves-tigate the 180 primary family caregivers of stroke survivors. The applicability of BCOS was evaluated by in-ternal consistency, construct validity and criterion-related validity. Results The correlation coefficient be-tween the items and the total BCOS score was 0.408~0.725 (P < 0.01 ).The total Cronbach's α was 0.877.Factor analysis used for examining the construct validity showed that 3 components were extracted and their accumulated contribution rate reached 60.93%.Factor loading of each item ranged from 0.510 to 0.875.The criterion-related validity was - 0.461 by using self-rated burden as a criterion(P < 0.01 ). Conclusions BCOS is applicable in the evaluation of the primary family caregivers' burden of stroke survivors.
